The idea of a speaking exercise is to “break the ice”. The general idea is to make students feel comfortable and focused. There are several ways of doing this. A great way is with changing partners, allow students to speak to a partner for 2-3 minutes and then change partners so that all the students can get to know each other.

Ask and answer the questions with a partner:

  1. What’s your name?
  2. Where are you from?
  3. What do you like about living in this city?
  4. Who is your best friend and why do you get on so well?
  5. What do you normally do in your leisure time?

 

Ask and answer the questions with a partner:

  1. Do you have a nickname?
  2. Have you got any siblings? If not, would you like any?
  3. What is the best thing about living here?
  4. Do you have a large group of friends or just a few?
  5. What do you normally do at weekends?

 

Ask and answer the questions with a partner:

  1. How many true friends do you have?
  2. How would you describe your personality?
  3. When were you last amazed by something that you had achieved?
  4. What is the worst thing about living here?
  5. In the future what would you like to do for a living?

 

Ask and answer the questions with a partner:

  1. What are your plans for the future?
  2. Do you find it hard to live within your means?
  3. What would you most like to achieve in this course?
  4. Why are some people more talented at learning languages than others?
  5. When was the last time you were let down by someone really close to you?
