Word patterns are an essential part of any English language assessment and should be treated as a priority. A word pattern refers to a word plus a preposition; a verb + preposition (listen to, consist of), an adjective + preposition (aware of, keen on) or a noun + preposition (solution to, belief about). Word patterns are a key part of all levels of language use from A1 to C2. You should always learn idioms and expressions with the START method to consolidate them.

To make the learning of word patterns easier, it is recommendable to focus on the preposition. You can either colour code them or group them. For that reason, the word patterns will appear in a list in alphabetical order, but sorted by preposition (some words may appear in more than one of the lists as they can be used with more than one preposition. When this occurs it will be explained accordingly).

We have created a tick list so that you can mark them off as you learn
