The discussion of controversial topics is an integral part of the teaching and learning of advanced level English. It is of use to promote active discussion and also to take students out of their confort zone. To do this it is essential to form a collaborative learning environment in which students respect each other and the viewpoints of others. From past experience I would suggest avoiding difficult topics such as war, religion, drugs or even bull fighting.
